From dream to reality: YSU student's educational journey to Spain
Elen Babakhanyan, a fourth-year student at the YSU Faculty of European Languages and Communication, is enrolled in the "English, Spanish and Communication" program. During her studies, Elen spent one semester at the University of Valencia in Spain. The new environment, along with the people she met and the experiences she had, became a memorable and valuable part of her student life, significantly broadening both her theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
"I have always loved the Spanish language and culture, so I had long dreamed of studying in Spain. Even before being admitted to university, I thought I should take advantage of the opportunities provided by my university and pursue my education in the country I love. That experience allowed me to become acquainted with a new culture, learn teaching methods of experienced professors, and make new friends," Elen emphasizes.
The student recalls that during classes, she frequently worked on team projects, which allowed her to collaborate with students from different countries and diverse cultural backgrounds. According to her, this experience helped her develop communication and teamwork skills, as well as learn how to work effectively in an international team.
Additionally, Elen became familiar with the Spanish education system, which she notes differs considerably from the Armenian system. At first, these differences seemed unusual and somewhat challenging, but over time she adapted and learned to work within this framework. During this period, she also deepened her language skills, particularly in Spanish and English.
"At the University of Valencia, students had the opportunity during the first week to attend various classes to identify the subjects that interested them most and to choose the courses and schedules they wished to follow. This is a major advantage, as many students are able to combine studies with work. Education at YSU is more focused on theoretical knowledge, providing a solid foundation for professional development. At the University of Valencia, however, more emphasis is placed on practical work and discussions, which promotes teamwork and the development of practical skills," the student says, adding that her favorite subjects were academic written and oral Spanish, as well as translation.
Thanks to these courses, she acquired practical knowledge directly related to her field of study, which made her classes highly engaging and allowed her to make the most of the opportunity.
"Yerevan State University has had a profound impact on my academic success. It was here that I gained fundamental knowledge and had the opportunity to participate in international programs, one of which was Erasmus+," Elen says.
The YSU student notes that she did not face significant difficulties in adapting to the new environment, as she had previously interacted with foreigners, which helped her quickly find her place in Spain. Challenges were mainly related to managing time and finances effectively. According to her, this experience helped her become more independent, organized, and responsible. Additionally, she often had to resolve daily matters—related to university, transportation, and living arrangements—on her own, further contributing to her personal growth.
"The multicultural environment helped me present myself and my country in the best possible way, broadened my perspective, and broke stereotypes. I made friends from Poland, Czechia, France, Germany, and Italy, with whom I continue to stay in touch despite the distance. I found it unusual that from the first meeting, one could become close and even share personal details. My German friend, who is extremely emotional, completely changed my perception of Germans," Elen shares.
The YSU student has participated in international conferences and cultural programs, gaining new friends and professional experience. She currently teaches English and Spanish, is completing an internship at the Hispanic Center, and works with the Honorary Consulates of Guatemala and Spain in Armenia.
Elen's goal is to continue her studies at the master's level and deepen her professional knowledge while expanding her career activities on international platforms.
